About this experience

Festivals in Vulcano is a seasonal programme of local celebrations held on the island of Vulcano, in the Aeolian archipelago off Sicily. The events centre on religious feast days, summer community gatherings, and the island's volcanic heritage, with processions, music, and food stalls. Visitors attend these festivals to observe Sicilian island traditions in a small, active volcanic setting.

What to expect

The summer calendar includes the Feast of San Calogero in June, with a statue procession through the main village and a fireworks display over the harbour.
Each festival runs 2 to 4 hours, typically starting in the late afternoon and continuing into the evening, with the main events on the piazza near the port.
Local families set up temporary stalls selling grilled swordfish, pane cunzato, and sweet ricotta pastries, alongside homemade wine from the island's vineyards.
During the August festival, a live band plays traditional tarantella music on a raised stage, and visitors can join the circle dance that follows.
The festivals suit travellers staying overnight on Vulcano or those arriving by hydrofoil from Lipari, as the events are within a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock.
A small procession of decorated boats leaves the harbour during the maritime blessing, with onlookers throwing flowers into the sea.
