Festivals in Trapani is a year-round programme of religious processions and cultural celebrations held across the historic city of Trapani, Sicily. The most famous event is the Misteri di Trapani, a 24-hour Good Friday procession of 20 life-sized wooden sculptures dating from the 17th century. Other events include the Processione dei Misteri, the Madonna di Trapani feast in August, and the salt-pan harvest festival in nearby Paceco.
What to expect
- The Misteri procession runs continuously for 24 hours from 2pm on Good Friday, with 20 wooden statues carried by members of the city's ancient guilds.
- During the Madonna di Trapani feast (7-8 August), the silver statue of the Virgin is carried from the Santuario dell'Annunziata to the cathedral, followed by fireworks over the harbour.
- The Salt Festival in September includes guided tours of the salt pans, a re-enactment of traditional salt harvesting, and tastings of local sea salt and Trapani sea-salt chocolate.
- Visitors can watch the 'Giostra dei Misteri' on Easter Saturday, a costumed parade with 15 floats re-enacting biblical scenes, accompanied by brass bands.
- The festival season suits cultural travellers and families, with most events free to attend and accessible on foot within Trapani's compact historic centre.
