Festivals in Panarea is a summer series of traditional Sicilian celebrations held on the smallest inhabited Aeolian island. The events blend religious processions, folk music, and local gastronomy in the island's main piazza and harbour. Each festival honours a patron saint or seasonal harvest, drawing both residents and visiting boaters.
What to expect
- Attend the Feast of San Pietro on 29 June, featuring a wooden saint statue carried through the alleys of San Pietro village and a boat procession around the harbour.
- Watch fireworks launched from the rocks at Punta Milazzese during the Ferragosto festival on 15 August, visible from the waterfront bars.
- Taste local specialities at the food stalls set up during the Sagra del Pesce, including freshly fried anchovies and caponata, served from early evening.
- Join the evening procession for the Madonna del Carmine in July, which winds from the church to the sea with candles and a brass band.
- Listen to live folk groups performing tarantella and Sicilian love songs in the Piazza San Pietro, with sets lasting until midnight.
- Suitable for travellers who enjoy intimate village celebrations, as the island's small size means crowds are limited to a few hundred participants.
