Festivals in Lipari is a year-round programme of religious processions, folk music, and food fairs held across the main town of Lipari and the neighbouring Aeolian islands. The calendar centres on the feast days of local saints, such as San Bartolomeo on 24 August, when the statue of the patron saint is carried through the streets followed by fireworks over the harbour. Each event combines Catholic ritual with secular entertainment, including live bands, street stalls, and traditional sweet pastries like 'nucatoli'.
What to expect
- Attend the San Bartolomeo procession on 24 August, which starts at the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and winds through the old town for about two hours
- Watch the closing fireworks display launched from the Marina Lunga harbour, visible from the seafront promenade
- Sample local festival foods at the stalls, including grilled swordfish, pane cunzato (topped bread), and almond-based sweets
- Join the evening folk music concerts in Piazza Mazzullo, featuring Sicilian tarantella groups and local singers
- See the decorated floats and banners that accompany the Easter Week processions, held on Good Friday and Easter Sunday
- Suits visitors interested in authentic local culture rather than commercial tourism, with most events free to attend and lasting between one and three hours
