Festivals in Lampedusa is a summer programme of religious and cultural celebrations held on the island of Lampedusa, Sicily, from June to September. It centres on the Feast of San Bartolomeo (24 August) and the Madonna di Porto Salvo procession, which blend maritime traditions with local food stalls and live music. The events take place in the main square, the harbour, and the streets of the town of Lampedusa.
What to expect
- The Feast of San Bartolomeo on 24 August includes a full-day procession of the saint's statue through the town, followed by a fireworks display over the harbour at 10 pm.
- The Madonna di Porto Salvo celebration in mid-July features a decorated fishing boat carrying the icon around the island's coast, with residents and visitors following in small boats.
- Each festival includes open-air food stalls selling local specialities such as grilled swordfish, couscous with seafood, and cassata siciliana, typically from 7 pm to midnight.
- Live folk music and traditional Sicilian tarantella dancing take place in Piazza Castello, with performances lasting about two hours each evening during the main feast days.
- The events suit families and older travellers, as the processions are slow-paced and the harbour-side seating offers clear views of the boats and fireworks without crowding.
