Sicily draws visitors with a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, and the island fills up between June and September. Meals on the island lean on seafood, handmade pasta, olive oil and local wines, so everyday shopping often includes those staples. Flights, ferries and hydrofoils connect Italy's islands to the mainland, and Italian is the language spoken day to day. Palermo and Catania are among the nearby places that anchor a wider itinerary on the island.
