What to expect

• Duration is 3 to 4 hours, covering a 6-kilometre round trip with 400 metres of elevation gain to the 391-metre Gran Cratere summit.
• The route includes a stop at the Fanghi Mud Pools, where visitors can bathe in the warm, mineral-rich mud before rinsing in the sea.
• Guides provide hard hats and filtered water, and explain the volcanic geology, including the 1888–1890 eruption that formed the current crater.
• The hike passes the Vulcano Porto harbour and the Faraglione di Levante rock stack, with views over Lipari and Salina islands on clear days.
• Suitable for fit walkers aged 12 and over; the final 200 metres of the crater ascent is loose scree and requires steady footing.
