Diving & Snorkeling in Mabul Island is a guided underwater activity based at Mabul, a sand island off the southeastern coast of Sabah, Malaysia. The site provides direct access to the Celebes Sea's coral reefs, muck-diving slopes, and the adjacent Sipadan Island's drop-offs. Divers and snorkelers use the island's jetty and house reefs for shore entries, with boat transfers to outer sites.
What to expect
- Guided boat dives and snorkel trips run daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with two morning dives and one afternoon dive typical for certified divers.
- Includes full scuba gear rental (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins) and a dive master leading each group of up to four divers; snorkelers receive mask, snorkel, fins, and a life vest.
- Sightings include pygmy seahorses, frogfish, cuttlefish, and blue-ringed octopus on the sandy slopes, plus green and hawksbill turtles cruising the reef edge.
- Snorkelers stay within a marked 200-metre lagoon area off the main jetty, where hard corals and juvenile reef fish are visible in 2-5 metres of water.
- Suitable for beginner divers with an Open Water certification (minimum age 10) and for non-divers who snorkel; night dives are available for advanced divers with a torch.
- Surface intervals include a 45-minute break at the island's shaded dive deck with drinking water and a light snack, while boat rides to outer Mabul sites take 5-10 minutes.
