About this experience

Surf Lessons in Dong Island is a guided surfing programme based on the eastern shore of Dong Island, Lý Sơn. The lessons operate on the island's exposed reef breaks, where consistent swells arrive from the South China Sea between October and March. Participants receive a board, leash, and wetsuit, with instruction tailored to their current ability level.

What to expect

Each session lasts 90 minutes, including a 15-minute land-based safety briefing on rip currents and reef hazards before entering the water.
All equipment is provided: a soft-top surfboard, ankle leash, and 3mm wetsuit, sized for adults and children over 12 years old.
You will paddle out to the main break at the island's eastern headland, passing through a shallow coral channel that is visible at low tide.
The lesson covers pop-up technique, paddle positioning, and wave selection, with the instructor in the water beside you for the first three waves.
Suitable for first-time surfers and intermediate riders; advanced surfers can request a board with a shorter fin setup for steeper waves.
After the lesson, you can rinse off at the outdoor freshwater shower located next to the equipment shed, which also stores dry bags for your belongings.
