Drone Photography in Volcano is a guided aerial photography session on the Big Island of Hawaii, operating from the town of Volcano. The activity provides access to volcanic landscapes, including craters, lava fields, and rainforest edges, under the supervision of a licensed pilot. Flights are conducted in compliance with Hawaii County drone regulations and FAA Part 107 rules.
What to expect
- 60-minute session includes a pre-flight safety briefing, drone setup, and 40 minutes of flight time over the Kilauea caldera rim.
- A certified drone pilot operates the aircraft while you control the camera gimbal and receive real-time 4K footage on a monitor.
- The route covers the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, the Devastation Trail lava field, and the Thurston Lava Tube entrance, with altitude limits set at 400 feet.
- All equipment is provided: a DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, two spare batteries, and a 64GB SD card with your raw footage transferred at the end.
- Suitable for photographers with a valid FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate; beginners receive a 10-minute camera settings tutorial before takeoff.
- Flights depart at sunrise or 2 hours before sunset to capture low-angle light on the volcanic terrain, with a maximum group size of 4 participants.
