Diving & Snorkeling in Honokaa is a guided water activity on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, operating from the small harbour town of Honokaa. The tours launch from the pier and access offshore reefs and lava tubes that are less frequented than Kona sites. Water conditions here are influenced by open-ocean swells, so trips run when the north shore is calm, typically during summer months.
What to expect
- Tours last 3 to 4 hours, including a 20-minute boat ride to the reef sites and 60 to 90 minutes in the water.
- Snorkel gear, fins, masks, and flotation vests are provided; certified divers receive tanks, weights, and a dive master guide.
- Visitors see green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and schools of yellow tang and butterflyfish along the basalt rock formations.
- The primary dive site is a lava tube system at 10 to 18 metres depth, with a swim-through tunnel open to advanced divers only.
- Suitable for first-time snorkellers and certified divers; a PADI or SSI card is required for scuba participation.
- A surface interval snack of fresh pineapple and water is included, but no full meals are served on board.
