Karystos Restaurants & Dining is the culinary scene of the port town of Karystos, on the southern tip of Evia island, not Aegina. It features waterfront tavernas, ouzeris, and grills serving fresh seafood, local lamb, and the region's renowned red wine from the nearby Mavrokampos vineyards. The dining strip along the harbour offers tables with direct views of the ferry dock and the Karystos bay.
What to expect
- Most tavernas open at 12:00 for lunch and 19:00 for dinner, with peak seating between 21:00 and 23:00 in summer
- A standard meal for two with a starter, two mains, and a half-litre of house wine costs between 35 and 50 euros
- Grilled octopus, fried calamari, and anchovy fillets are the most common seafood starters, served with lemon and olive oil
- Several kitchens offer 'kokinisto' (beef or goat in tomato sauce) and 'spetsofai' (sausage with peppers), both slow-cooked daily
- The harbourfront tables are the main draw, but the side streets behind the promenade have quieter, family-run ouzeris with lower prices
- Vegetarian options are limited to Greek salads, horta (wild greens), and fava bean puree, available at most venues
