Festivals in Sabang is a recurring cultural celebration held on Weh Island, Sabang, Indonesia, at the westernmost tip of the archipelago. The event showcases Acehnese traditions, maritime heritage, and local crafts through parades, performances, and community gatherings. It takes place annually around major Islamic or national holidays, drawing both residents and domestic tourists to the island's main square and waterfront.
What to expect
- A 3-day programme includes a traditional Acehnese dance parade (Ratoh Duek) along the main road from Sabang City Square to the harbour.
- Visitors can watch a fishing boat decoration contest where local crews outfit their vessels with flags and palm leaves before a short race in Sabang Bay.
- A night market sets up 40 stalls selling local snacks like mie aceh, roasted fish, and kopi saban, plus handwoven songket textiles.
- Daily cultural workshops at the Sabang Museum let attendees try making renggong (bamboo percussion instruments) and practise basic Acehnese martial arts (silat).
- The closing ceremony features a communal feast (kenduri) with free portions of nasi gurih and beef rendang for all attendees, served on banana leaves.
- Suitable for families and cultural enthusiasts, with shaded seating areas and a children's kite-flying zone near the beachfront stage.
