Artisan Markets in Balohan is a weekly open-air market on the waterfront of Balohan village, Weh Island (Sabang), Aceh. It showcases handmade crafts, local spices, and woven textiles from the island’s Acehnese and immigrant communities. The market operates on Saturday mornings from 8am to 1pm, drawing both residents and ferry passengers arriving from Banda Aceh.
What to expect
- Stalls are arranged along the main jetty road, with 30 to 40 vendors selling batik sarongs, coconut-shell jewellery, and palm-leaf baskets
- Visitors can watch live demonstrations of traditional Acehnese songket weaving and coffee bean roasting on a portable charcoal stove
- Each purchase includes a small sample of local snacks such as keukarah (fried cassava cake) and kopi sanger (iced milk coffee) from the adjacent food stalls
- The market runs for five hours, and most vendors accept cash only, with prices starting at 10,000 rupiah for small trinkets
- Suitable for travellers seeking authentic souvenirs, but not for those expecting antiques or large-scale crafts; the focus is on everyday household items and fresh produce
- A short 15-minute walk from Balohan ferry terminal makes it an easy stop for day-trippers before returning to the mainland
