Vancouver Island is mountainous with temperate rainforest, and fishing, sealing and shipbuilding shaped its communities. Summers stay cool while winters turn cold. English is the main language spoken, and ferries, bridges and domestic flights are the usual ways onto the island. Fresh seafood, including salmon, anchors much of the local cooking, and Westerly Family Restaurant fits that pattern.
