Canadian island food features Atlantic lobster, snow crab, PEI mussels and oysters, and Pacific salmon. English is the main language, with French in parts of PEI and Nova Scotia and Inuktitut in Nunavut's islands. Fishing, sealing and shipbuilding shaped island communities, and Celtic music survives in Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Northern Canadian islands have a short growing season and long sea-ice winters, with months of darkness. Victoria, Nanaimo and Port Alberni sit within the wider island circuit.
Sooke sits west of Victoria, and the surrounding island road network links the town to Nanaimo, Tofino, Ucluelet, Courtenay, Parksville, Port Alberni and Campbell River.
