Hiking Tours in Nari Basin is a guided walking programme on Ulleungdo, operating within the volcanic crater plain of Nari Basin. The tours traverse the island's interior trails, linking the basin's farmlands with forested ridges and the surrounding peaks. This activity provides direct access to the basin's unique geology and the seasonal crops grown by its few resident farmers.
What to expect
- Tours run 3 to 4 hours, covering 6 to 8 kilometres of marked mountain paths with an elevation gain of 300 to 500 metres.
- Each tour includes a licensed local guide, a packed lunch of Ulleungdo-grown produce, and walking poles for the steeper sections.
- Participants walk past active potato and bean fields inside the basin, then climb to a ridge viewpoint overlooking the crater rim and the Sea of Japan.
- The route passes the Nari Basin Ecological Centre, where guides explain the island's volcanic formation and the basin's role as a former refuge for shipwrecked sailors.
- Suitable for hikers with moderate fitness; the trail includes wooden staircases and gravel switchbacks, with no rock climbing or scrambling required.
- Tours depart daily at 09:00 from the Nari Basin car park, with a maximum group size of 12 people and a minimum age of 10 years.
