Churches in Nari Basin is a self-guided walking tour of the historic churches and chapel sites scattered across the volcanic basin on Ulleungdo Island. The route connects the early 20th-century Protestant mission stations with the island’s unique mountain-farming villages, offering a quiet look at local religious heritage. Visitors follow a marked path through forest and fields, with each church building retaining its original wooden frame and simple interior.
What to expect
- The tour covers 4 churches and 2 chapel ruins over a 3-kilometre loop, taking about 2 hours at a relaxed pace.
- Each stop includes a printed information board with historical photos and a short account of the congregation's founding.
- The first church, built in 1908, still holds a Sunday service at 10:00; visitors may enter the nave outside service hours.
- The route passes the old parsonage garden, where the original well and stone boundary wall remain intact.
- Suitable for walkers of all ages, but the final 300 metres to the hilltop chapel involves a steep gravel incline.
- A printed trail map is available at the Nari Basin Visitor Centre, and the path is clearly marked with wooden signposts.
