Diving & Snorkeling in De Koog is a guided underwater activity based at the North Sea coast of Texel, near the village of De Koog. It offers access to the island's clear coastal waters, including shipwrecks and sandy-bottom reefs. The activity runs from the nearby beach or harbour, with equipment provided by local dive centres.
What to expect
- Sessions last 2 to 3 hours, including a pre-dive briefing and full equipment rental (wetsuit, BCD, regulator, and weights).
- Guided dives visit the wreck of the SS Houtman, a steel steamship sunk in 1939, lying at 18 metres depth with visible boilers and cargo holds.
- Snorkelers stay in the shallow inshore zone, where sandbanks and eelgrass beds attract juvenile plaice, shrimp, and small crabs.
- Visibility ranges from 3 to 8 metres depending on tide and wind; low tide offers the clearest water for both divers and snorkelers.
- Suitable for certified divers (minimum Open Water Diver) and confident swimmers; beginners can take a try-dive with an instructor for an extra fee.
- All participants receive a post-dive debrief with a logbook stamp and a map of the dive site showing the wreck layout and entry points.
