Puerto de la Cruz occupies the north-western shore of Tenerife, where the town spreads between the old harbour and the lower slopes above it. The TF-5 motorway links the town with the capital and the airport.
Trade winds known as the alisios keep temperatures moderate across the Canaries, and Saharan dust sometimes arrives in a calima. Volcanic soils support small vineyards and banana plantations, and several islands make their own honey and cheese. Car ferries run between the larger islands, and faster passenger boats serve the shortest crossings. The main islands were home to the Guanche people before the Spanish conquest in the fifteenth century.
