Restaurants & Dining in Vathy is the collective name for the tavernas, ouzeri, and seafood grill houses lining the harbour of Vathy, Aegina. This dining scene operates along the waterfront promenade, where tables sit within metres of moored fishing boats. The restaurants serve Aeginetan pistachio-based dishes, fresh-caught fish, and local wine, with menus changing daily according to the catch.
What to expect
- Most tavernas open at 12:00 and serve continuously until 23:00, with peak seating between 20:00 and 22:00
- A standard meal for two with a shared starter, two mains, and half a litre of house wine costs between 35 and 50 euros
- Diners watch the day's catch being unloaded from caiques at the small pier, and several kitchens display the fish on ice for selection before cooking
- The three waterfront ouzeri offer meze plates of grilled octopus, fava, and marinated anchovies, with portions sized for sharing
- Vegetarian options include Aegina's protected-origin pistachios used in salads, stuffed vine leaves, and a local cheese pie with honey
- Seating is exclusively outdoors on the paved quay, with no indoor dining, so tables are shaded by large umbrellas and face the Saronic Gulf
