Festivals in Tenerife is a year-round programme of public celebrations across the island, from Carnival processions in Santa Cruz to Romerías in rural villages. Each event combines religious tradition, local music, and street food, with dates set by the liturgical calendar or municipal councils. Visitors can join processions, watch firework displays, and sample regional dishes at temporary stalls.
What to expect
- Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife runs for two weeks in February or March, featuring a grand opening parade with floats and costumed comparsas, plus a closing burial of the sardine ceremony.
- Romería de San Roque in Garachico (August) includes decorated ox-carts, folk dancers in traditional Canarian dress, and free offerings of local wine and cheese from parishioners.
- The Corpus Christi carpets in La Orotava (June) cover the streets with coloured sand and flower petals, forming geometric patterns that remain on display for one day only.
- The Fiestas del Cristo de La Laguna (September) combines a religious procession with a fairground, live bands, and a fireworks castle built over the town square.
- The Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes in El Hierro (every 4 years, next in 2027) is a 40-kilometre pilgrimage carrying the statue downhill, with stops for traditional dances and meals at each village.
- Most festivals include a verbena (open-air dance) that starts after midnight, with local orchestras playing until dawn, and food stalls selling papas arrugadas and mojo sauce.
