About this experience

Artisan Markets in Palermo is a rotating series of open-air stalls in the Sicilian capital, held weekly in Piazza Marina and other historic squares. The markets showcase local ceramics, textiles, and food products from small workshops across the island. Visitors browse directly with makers, who often demonstrate traditional techniques like majolica painting or marionette carving.

What to expect

The market runs every Sunday from 9:00 to 14:00, with roughly 80 stalls spread across the piazza
Each stall is staffed by the artisan who made the goods, allowing direct conversation about materials and methods
Typical items include hand-painted Sicilian carts, coral jewellery, lava stone carvings, and embroidered linens
A dedicated food section offers fresh arancini, cannoli, and local cheeses for immediate consumption
Live demonstrations of puppet-making and loom weaving occur at two central booths between 10:30 and 12:30
The market suits collectors of unique souvenirs and travellers interested in regional craft traditions, not mass-produced goods
