The hill country in central Sri Lanka is cooler and wetter than the coastal plains. Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean with a central highland mass and coastal plains all around. The country was known as Ceylon until 1972, gained independence in 1948, and has ancient cities at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Blue whales and dolphins are seen off the south coast, and sea turtles nest on several beaches.
