First-time visitors to Sri Lanka should plan around the island's tropical climate, where the southwest coast stays driest roughly December-March and the east coast is best roughly May-September. Island cooking leans heavily on spice, with rice and curry, fresh seafood and tropical fruit forming the core of most meals. International flights serve the island, with domestic transport by road and rail. Sinhala and Tamil are the main languages, and English is widely used. Colombo sits close to Galle, Kandy, Negombo, Bentota, Mirissa, Unawatuna and Arugam Bay for those extending their stay.
