Spetses sits within the Greek island group, where bakeries turn out spanakopita and tyropita and local vineyards produce wines worth trying. Winter brings rain and rougher seas, and many hotels and tavernas close between November and March, so a visit in the warmer months finds more of the island open. The island's position means arrivals by sea are the norm, with catamarans and ferries handling the bulk of traffic.
