Churches in Spetses Town are a collection of historic Orthodox churches and chapels scattered across the main town of Spetses, Greece. These buildings, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, include the Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos and the Panagia Armata church, each with distinct architectural and religious significance. Visitors can walk between the churches on foot, as the town is compact and pedestrian-friendly.
What to expect
- Visit the Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos, the town's main church, with its tall bell tower and interior icons from the 19th century.
- See the Panagia Armata church, built in 1824 to commemorate the naval victory of 1822, and its small adjacent museum.
- Walk the narrow streets between churches, with most sites within a 10-minute walk of the harbour.
- Attend a Greek Orthodox service, typically held on Sunday mornings and feast days, to observe local worship practices.
- View the external frescoes and carved marble doorways on several chapels, such as the Church of Agios Ioannis.
- Combine the church visit with a stroll along the Dapia waterfront, where the churches are located near cafes and shops.
