Hornby lies within Christchurch's suburban ring, so the workshop is straightforward to reach by car from most parts of the city. Visitors travelling the South Island by vehicle can plan a service stop around a Christchurch leg.

New Zealand sits on the boundary of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, so small earthquakes are common across the islands. Tūī, kererū and other native birds are common, and dolphins, fur seals and seabirds are seen around the coast. Rugby union is followed closely nationwide, and the national team plays in black. Polynesian settlers reached New Zealand around the thirteenth century, and British colonisation followed from 1840.
