South Island's seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere, with summer from December to February and winter from June to August. English is the main language and te reo Māori is also official, so Māori place names are used throughout the country. Polynesian settlers reached New Zealand around the thirteenth century, and British colonisation followed from 1840. New Zealand sits on the boundary of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, so small earthquakes are common.
