Sardinia's road network connects Cagliari with the other main towns, so a stop for vehicle checks fits into a wider island journey. Italian is the main language, with Sardinian and local dialects spoken alongside it, and visitors will find that basic Italian helps at the counter. Greek, Carthaginian, Roman and Arab traces survive across the island, from Sardinia's nuraghe towers to its older settlements. The island is rocky and hilly, with cliffs, coves and small beaches often reached only by boat, and loggerhead turtles nest on some island beaches while Eleonora's falcon breeds on the cliffs.
