Greek island cooking centres on seafood, olive oil, feta and other local cheeses, and grilled meats, and daily life slows in the afternoon, with tavernas serving late into the evening. Renting a car here suits travellers who want to move between the island's villages at their own pace.
On Samos, road signs and menus are written in the Greek alphabet, so a little familiarity with the letters helps when driving between villages. Ferries and high-speed catamarans connect the islands to Piraeus, Rafina and each other, though winter services are fewer, so summer travel is easier to arrange. Votsalakia sits close to the Κάμπος Μαραθοκάμπου area for those heading further along the coast.
