El Progreso del Jibarito
About
Found on Puerto Rico, El Progreso del Jibarito is a bar in Guayanilla, 00656, in the south of the island. The setting puts it well away from the resort strip around San Juan and Carolina, so reaching it means a drive south from the capital or a stop while travelling along the southern coast.
As a bar in Guayanilla, it serves the town rather than the tourist corridor, and that southern position is part of what defines it. Visitors have given it a 4.2 out of 5 average across 13 reviews, a modest tally that points to a local following rather than a visitor crowd. Ponce, the nearest of the island's larger towns on this side, sits within the same southern region.
Anyone coming from the main resorts should plan the journey around a car, since the town lies off the routes that link San Juan with the rest of the island. Guayanilla itself is a small southern municipality, and the bar draws on the town around it.
The Caribbean hurricane season runs from the start of June to the end of November, which is worth weighing when planning a southern drive. Carnival parades take place across the Caribbean, some before Lent and others in the summer months, and a southern town bar often marks them in its own way.
