Surf Lessons in Vila Balaia is a guided surfing session on the north coast of Porto Santo, at a beach known for consistent Atlantic swells. The activity pairs certified instructors with small groups to teach wave riding fundamentals in waist-deep water. Lessons run year-round, adapting to the day's tide and swell direction.
What to expect
- 90-minute session includes a wetsuit, soft-top surfboard, and a land-based safety briefing before entering the water
- Instructors are certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and maintain a 1:4 student-to-teacher ratio
- You will practise paddling, pop-up technique, and wave selection on a gently sloping sandy bottom at Praia da Balaia
- Suitable for beginners aged 8 and up; non-swimmers can join with a buoyancy aid and close supervision
- Each lesson ends with a video review of your rides, showing your pop-up timing and balance points
- Changing rooms and outdoor showers are available at the beach kiosk, with lockers for valuables
