Patong sits on Phuket's west coast, and the nearby resorts of Karon, Kata, Kamala, Bang Tao, Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong are all within reach by road. Thai islands have a tropical climate with high humidity and warm temperatures all year, so lightweight clothing suits most stays.

Thai food balances sweet, sour, salty and spicy flavours, with dishes such as tom yum, green curry and pad thai found across Phuket. Thai islands lie in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, and many are fringed with coral reefs, which shapes the day trips on offer. The Chakri dynasty has reigned since 1782, and Thailand was never colonised by a European power, a history that shows in the island's temples and festivals.
