Phuket's tropical climate brings high humidity and warm temperatures through the year, so light clothing suits most stays. Thai is the national language, written in its own script and tonal, meaning pitch changes a word's meaning. Thai cooking relies on fish sauce, shrimp paste, coconut milk, lemongrass and chillies, with rice as the staple of most meals. The waters around the Thai islands hold coral reefs, whale sharks and dugongs, and sea turtles nest on several island beaches.
