Diving & Snorkeling in Gaios is a guided underwater excursion based in the harbour town of Gaios on Paxos island. The activity offers access to sea caves, rocky reefs, and seagrass meadows within the Ionian Sea. Participants explore clear waters with visibility often exceeding 20 metres, accompanied by local instructors.
What to expect
- Sessions last 2 to 3 hours, including a 45-minute dive or 1-hour snorkel at a site chosen by the guide based on wind and current.
- All equipment is provided: mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, and scuba tank for certified divers; beginners receive a 15-minute shore briefing before entering the water.
- Visitors see the Blue Caves on the southern coast of Paxos, with underwater arches and walls covered in red and orange coralline algae.
- The route passes over Posidonia seagrass beds, where juvenile damselfish, wrasses, and octopus are commonly sighted at depths of 3 to 12 metres.
- Suitable for swimmers with basic water confidence; scuba certification (Open Water or equivalent) is required for the dive option, while snorkelling has no certification requirement.
- Groups are capped at 8 participants per guide, with a support boat following the group to collect tired swimmers and carry spare air cylinders.
