Churches in Aliki is a self-guided tour of the historic chapels and churches clustered around the fishing village of Aliki on Paros's southwestern coast. The route includes the 17th-century Church of Agios Nikolaos, the whitewashed Panagia Elani, and the small chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, each with distinct Cycladic architecture and local iconography. Visitors walk between the sites on foot, with the entire circuit taking roughly 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.
What to expect
- Walk a 1.5-kilometre loop that connects four active churches, starting at the harbour chapel of Agios Nikolaos and ending at the hillside Panagia Elani
- View original 18th-century wood-carved iconostasis and silver votive offerings inside the main parish church, which is open daily from 9:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00
- See the domed, barrel-vaulted interior of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, a 16th-century chapel with faded fresco fragments on its apse
- Attend a short evening service on Saturdays at 18:30, when the local priest chants in Greek and the congregation lights beeswax candles
- Suitable for walkers of all fitness levels, as the route uses paved lanes and gentle stone steps, with benches and shade from tamarisk trees at each stop
- No entrance fees or tickets are required; visitors should dress with covered shoulders and knees out of respect for active worship spaces
