Palawan forms part of the Philippine archipelago, a chain of more than seven thousand islands lying between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The climate is tropical maritime, so humidity stays high and temperatures remain warm through the year. Spanish settlement followed Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in 1521, and the Catholic faith that took root then still shapes town fiestas honouring patron saints across the islands. Filipino and English are both widely used, which helps visitors order food and arrange transport.
