Scandinavian islands are largely glacially shaped, with rocky skerries, moraine ridges and thin soils, which gives Öland its flat, stony character. Northern Scandinavian islands see midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter, though southern islands such as Öland do not. Local food is built on fish, including cod, herring and salmon, dried, salted or smoked. Gotland is reached by ferry from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn, and by flights to Visby.
