New Zealand's islands run on a temperate climate, with December to February the busiest stretch and winters remaining gentle at low elevations. Local cooking leans on fresh seafood, lamb, dairy and wines, so a bar menu on North Island tends to reflect those staples. Domestic flights and ferries knit the islands together, while English and Māori are the languages visitors hear most. Summer travel fills the calendar, making the warmer months the liveliest time to be out.
