Towns such as Port Louis, Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Pereybère, Beau-Vallon, Le Morne, Belle Mare and Mahébourg are linked by road.
The cyclone season runs from November to April, and the cooler, drier months fall between June and September, so timing shapes a stay. Mauritian Creole is the most widely spoken language, and Rodrigues has its own related Creole. The dodo lived on Mauritius and the solitaire on Rodrigues, and both flightless birds are now extinct, a history that appears in the island's museums and monuments.
