Hawaiian culture includes hula dance, oli chants and the voyaging traditions of Polynesian navigators, and churches on Maui often sit within communities where those traditions remain visible. Spam, rice and macaroni salad appear widely in Hawaiian home cooking and lunch plates, a reminder of the islands' layered foodways.
Hawaii is a chain of volcanic islands formed as the Pacific Plate moved over a hotspot, and the Hawaiian monk seal and green sea turtle live in Hawaiian waters and haul out on its beaches. Visitors travelling between islands arrive by air, since no road or regular ferry links the Hawaiian chain. English and Hawaiian are both official languages, and Hawaiian words appear widely in place names across Maui.
