Maui rewards visitors who build in time for the island's varied climate, from the wet windward coast to the dry summit slopes, and the drive up to Kula passes through several of these zones. Lahaina, Kihei, Paia, Kaanapali, Wailea, Hana, Makawao and Wailuku are the main settlements visitors use as bases, and reaching the overlook from any of them means a drive rather than public transport. Packing layers matters, since the temperature at this altitude drops well below the coastal norm. Hawaiian home cooking leans on Spam, rice and macaroni salad, and plate lunches are a reliable stop after a morning on the mountain.
