Hawaii is a chain of volcanic islands formed as the Pacific Plate moved over a hotspot, which gives Maui its two-lobed shape and central high ground. Hawaiian culture includes hula dance, oli chants and the voyaging traditions of Polynesian navigators, all of which appear in performances around the island. English and Hawaiian are both official languages in Hawaii, and Hawaiian words appear widely in place names. Trade winds blow from the north-east, bringing most rain to the windward coasts.
