About this experience

Surf Lessons in Mabul Island is a beginner-focused surf coaching programme based on the sandbars and shallow reef flats off Mabul, Sabah. The lessons use soft-top boards and are timed to the seasonal swell from April to September. Each session runs for two hours with a certified instructor who covers paddle technique, pop-up mechanics, and wave reading in waist-deep water.

What to expect

Two-hour lesson with a certified instructor, including a 15-minute land drill and 105 minutes in the water
Soft-top surfboard and leash provided; rash vest and reef shoes available for rent at the on-beach kiosk
Sessions start at 8:00 AM or 2:00 PM, matching the low-tide window when the sandbar is exposed
Practise on gentle, waist-deep waves that break over sand, suitable for first-timers and children aged 8 and up
Group size capped at six students per instructor, with individual video feedback after the final wave
