Camel Riding in Dong Island is a guided camel trek along the volcanic sand flats of Dong Island, part of the Lý Sơn archipelago off central Vietnam. The activity operates on a fixed 30-minute route that circles the island's eastern basalt cliffs and tidal pools. Riders sit on padded saddles with a local handler leading each camel, suitable for adults and children over 120 cm tall.
What to expect
- Ride a single camel for 30 minutes on a marked 1.5 km loop from the Dong Island jetty to the black lava rock outcrop
- Each rider is paired with one handler who controls the camel and provides a safety briefing before mounting
- The route passes the island's saltwater lagoon, where camels pause for a photo stop against the backdrop of the Re Island volcano
- Tickets include a woven straw hat and a bottle of filtered water, with a shaded waiting area for non-riders
- Morning slots (8:00–10:00) offer cooler temperatures and lower tide exposure of the coral shelves; afternoon slots (14:00–16:00) have stronger sea breeze
- Suitable for first-time riders; the camels are trained for calm behaviour, and the pace is a slow walk with no trotting or galloping
