Festivals in Arrecife is the annual programme of cultural celebrations held in the capital of Lanzarote, centred on the waterfront and historic streets. The calendar includes the Fiestas de San Ginés in August, Carnival in February, and the Virgen del Carmen maritime procession in July. Each event combines local traditions, live music, and street performances for residents and visitors.
What to expect
- The August Fiestas de San Ginés run for ten days with nightly concerts, a craft market, and a firework display over the Charco de San Ginés lagoon.
- Carnival features a themed parade of floats and costumed groups along Avenida de las Playas, followed by an open-air dance party until dawn.
- The Virgen del Carmen procession on 16 July carries the statue of the patron saint of fishermen on decorated boats from the harbour, accompanied by flares and brass bands.
- Street food stalls sell local dishes such as sancocho (salted fish with mojo) and papas arrugadas during the main festival weekends.
- Family-focused activities include children's workshops, puppet shows, and traditional Canarian wrestling demonstrations in Plaza de las Palmas.
- Most events are free to attend and take place outdoors, with the main stages accessible by foot from the city centre bus stops.
