Festivals in Valle Gran Rey are the annual patron saint celebrations and cultural events held across the villages of this southwestern La Gomera valley. These fiestas combine religious processions, live folk music, traditional Canarian wrestling, and open-air dances in the main plazas of La Calera, Borbalán, and Arure. Each festival follows the local calendar, with the largest gatherings in August for San Roque and in September for Nuestra Señora de la Luz.
What to expect
- Attend the August San Roque fiesta in La Calera, featuring a candlelit procession and a firework display over the harbour
- Watch the traditional Canarian wrestling (lucha canaria) matches held on sand courts in the village squares
- Join the evening verbenas with live bands playing salsa, merengue, and local folk tunes until 3am
- Sample the festival food stalls selling roasted pork, gofio escaldado, and local palm honey
- See the colourful paper flower carpets laid out for the religious procession on the main street of Borbalán
- Suitable for families during daytime events, while the late-night dances draw a mixed adult crowd
