Across Kyushu the year divides into four seasons, and the hottest, most humid stretch falls in July and August while the southern islands keep their winters gentle. Japanese island cooking leans on seafood landed fresh, rice grown locally and dishes tied to each region. Ferries, bridges and domestic flights knit Japan's islands together, and Japanese is the everyday language. Beppu and Yufuin sit within the same island for those extending a Kyushu itinerary.
