Festivals in Merichas is a series of traditional Greek religious and cultural celebrations held in the port village of Merichas on Kythnos island. These events typically mark saint’s days and local harvests, featuring processions, music, and communal feasts. The festivals take place in the village square and around the small church of Agios Nikolaos, drawing both residents and visiting sailors.
What to expect
- Each festival begins with a church service followed by a candlelit procession through the harbour front, lasting about 90 minutes
- Attendees receive free portions of locally cooked goat stew, bread, and wine, served from communal tables in the square
- Live bands play traditional Cycladic violin and lute music from 9 pm until midnight, with open dancing for all ages
- A small fair with stalls sells handmade lace, honey, and thyme-infused olive oil produced on the island
- The summer festival on 20 July coincides with the peak sailing season, so the waterfront is lined with yachts and caiques
- Suitable for families and solo travellers, as seating is on stone benches and plastic chairs, and no formal dress code is enforced
